Staircase Configuration – Staircase Shape

Step 2 in our staircase configurator – Information about staircase shapes

Interior staircases are available in a variety of shapes, each with its own advantages and structural considerations. We offer an overview and guide to help you choose the right option.

STEP 2: SHAPE AND FUNCTION

Step 2 allows you to determine the shape of your staircase. Straight staircases with landings are known for being comfortable and safe to use. However, keep in mind that they require more floor space. For smaller rooms, curved staircases may be a better choice. The key rule is: never compromise on safety. Curved staircases provide a comfortable ascent while combining aesthetics with functionality.

Here are the main features and advantages of different staircase shapes:

Straight Staircase:

Advantages:

  • Simple construction and installation.
  • Space-saving design, as they lead directly to the upper floor and require less space.
  • Clear sightlines and a modern, linear appearance.
  • Ideal for narrow rooms or hallways.

Structural considerations:

  • Require a straight wall or unobstructed space.
  • The pitch and riser height must be carefully planned to ensure a comfortable ascent.
Straight Staircase:

1 × 1/4-Turn Staircase with Landing:

Advantages:

  • The landing provides a comfortable resting area while climbing the stairs.
  • Visually appealing, as the staircase features an elegant turn.
  • Provides greater stability and safety when ascending the stairs.

Structural considerations:

  • The landing requires more space.
  • A staircase with a landing can be more easily integrated into rooms that are not perfectly rectangular.
1 × 1/4-Turn Staircase with Landing:

1 × 1/4-Turn Staircase:

Advantages:

  • Winder staircases take up less space than straight staircases while still offering an elegant appearance.
  • They are suitable for rooms with limited space where a landing is not practical.

Structural considerations:

  • Winder staircases require careful planning to ensure safe movement up and down the stairs.
  • The riser heights and tread depths should be consistent to ensure comfortable walking.
1 × 1/4-Turn Staircase:

2 × 1/4-Turn Staircase with Landing:

Advantages:

  • The double turn provides greater stability and safety when ascending the stairs.
  • The landing provides additional space for resting and allows for more efficient use of the available space.

Structural considerations:

  • The staircase requires more space than a single-turn staircase due to the double turn and landing.
  • Thorough calculation of the step dimensions and staircase space is required.
2 × 1/4-Turn Staircase with Landing:

2 × 1/4-Turn Staircase:

Advantages:

  • A double-turn staircase gives the staircase an elegant and impressive appearance.
  • Allows for comfortable use of space in two-storey houses.

Structural considerations:

  • The double turn requires precise planning to ensure that the steps are even and comfortable.
  • Requires more space than a single-turn staircase.
2 × 1/4-Turn Staircase:

When choosing the shape of your staircase, it is important to consider your aesthetic preferences, the available space and practical requirements. Structural aspects such as tread dimensions, riser height and railing design play an important role in ensuring a safe and comfortable staircase. As experienced staircase builders, we are happy to help you find the optimal staircase shape for your specific needs.

Questions and Answers About the Shape of an Interior Staircase

1. Which staircase shape is most suitable for small spaces?

For rooms with limited space, a straight staircase or a 90° winder staircase without a landing is usually the best choice.

A straight staircase is structurally simple and works well in narrow hallways.
A winder staircase makes efficient use of the corner of a room and saves floor space that would otherwise be occupied by a landing.

In our configurator, you can easily compare the different options and choose the solution that best suits your floor plan.

2. What is the difference between a winder staircase with and without a landing?

The main difference lies in the space requirements and the level of comfort.

With a landing:
The landing creates a flat intermediate area, increases safety and makes walking more comfortable. However, it requires more space. It is particularly suitable for households with children or elderly people.

Without a landing (winder staircase):
At the turn, the steps gradually widen or narrow, allowing the staircase to change direction without an intermediate landing. This solution has an elegant appearance and saves space, but it requires precise calculation of the step dimensions to maintain a smooth and natural walking rhythm.

3. Why is choosing the staircase shape in the configurator so important?

The shape of the staircase affects not only the appearance of the interior, but also the structural design and walking comfort. In the second step of the configurator, you determine whether the staircase should:

  • have a modern, straightforward appearance (straight staircase),
  • naturally follow the layout of the room (winder options),
  • offer maximum stability and safety thanks to landings (for example, a 2 × 1/4-turn staircase with landings).

The right choice has a significant impact on the final dimensions and structural design.

4. What should be considered when planning a 2 × 1/4-turn staircase?

A staircase with two 90° turns is very comfortable and has an impressive appearance, but it also requires more careful planning.

Space:
Due to the two turns, it requires more floor space than simpler staircase designs.

Design accuracy:
To ensure comfortable movement, the riser height and tread depth must be calculated precisely and properly coordinated.

Stability:
This design offers high rigidity and can become a distinctive architectural feature of the interior.
